Alexandroupolis or Alexandroupoli is a city in the northeastern part of the Hellenic Republic. The city is part of the historical region of Western Thrace and is the center of Dem Alexandroupoli and Nom Evros, part of the administrative region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
The city is also the center of the Alexandria Diocese of the Greek Orthodox Church. Alexandroupolis is located on the northern shore of the Aegean Sea, a few kilometers west of the mouth of the Maritsa River (Evros), at the foot of the low mountain Ovcharitsa (Tsopan). The population of the city is 55,000 inhabitants. Alexandroupolis is a relatively new city with a short history that began in 1850.
