Sparta
Sparta (Σπάρτη) is a polis in ancient Greece on the Peloponnese peninsula, which originated around the 10th century BC along the valley of the Eurotas River. Unlike other Greek polises, Sparta did not have fortress walls, although Ancient Sparta was a highly militarized community and militant polis. The ancient city was under aristocratic rule in the person of the Council of Elders. Sparta in the Peloponnese and Athens in Central Greece are the polises in which the whole history of the Greeks is broken.
