It has a "rich collection" of beautiful, sunny beaches and crystal clear water. The island of Thassos reflects the entire Greek culture and traditions. Historical monuments such as the remains of the Old City, the Temple of Apollo and the Sanctuary of Dionysus, tell of the glorious days of its past, as well as its rich history, sealed in archaeological finds scattered throughout the island.
Various conquerors and invaders have written part of the history of the island of Thassos, but it was most often ruled by Thracian tribes. According to mythology, Thassos was discovered because of the many love adventures of Zeus. Legend said that Zeus kidnapped the only daughter of the king of Eastern Function - Europe, and took her to the island of Crete. Thassos - one of the king's sons, went to search his sister and so came to this island. He fell in love with the rich vegetation and the beautiful climate and refused to look for his sister Europa. That is the way how was born the name of the island.
The capital of the island of Thassos is Limenas, which is located on the east coast. With the growing interest of tourists in Limenas, the city changed its name to Thassos. One of the most important archaeological discoveries of Limenas are the remains of the ancient city of Agora, located near the port and the museum. Other sights of Limenas are the Sanctuary of Artemis and Dionysus, as well as the Old Theater, the Acropolis and the Sanctuary of Athens perched on the hill.
Among the must-see sights on the island of Thassos are the Castro Palace, the Archangel Monastery, built directly on the cliffs overlooking the sea, the Panagias Monastery and the St. Panteleimon Monastery, which is located in the inside of the island, near Kazaviti.
For those who do not like to walk in the past, Thassos offers beautiful white beaches and crystal clear water - such as Makriamos beach, narrow coastal lowlands with olive groves, figs and peaches, as well as ideal places for romantic adventures.
