The Messinian Peninsula or simply Messenia (Μεσσηνία) is a regional unit in the Greek region of the Peloponnese. To the east, Messenia is separated from Laconia by the border ridge of Taygetus. The history of the Messenia's territory is rich. Here is the legendary city of Pylos. As a result of so many wars Sparta conquered the area, which was liberated again in 369 BC, when the eponymous city of Messenia was founded in the 1st century BC. Messenia became part of the Roman province of Achaea.
