Nisyros Island belongs to the group of the ancient southern diaspora. Nisyros is located west of the island of Rhodes. Today the population is about 950 inhabitants.
Nisyros is a Greek island that is a real volcano. This island territory is green, contrary to the fact that its scarce supplies of drinking water have a sulfur taste. Its interesting relief features rocky peaks that surround the caldera formed after the eruption of the volcano in 1422. A legend hovers around the island of Nisyros. Its says that the island appeared as a result of Poseidon's anger at the titan Polyvotis. Poseidon trapped him with a rock and so the island of Nisyros was "born". The legend still keeps the titan alive and tells of my relentless attempts to escape, defining the bubbling and whistling coming from the bowels of the volcano as moans to help Polyvotis.
The capital and main port on the island of Nisyros is the village of Mandraki. The town is very attractive and is located in favor of its knight's castle, the nice collected houses in bright flowers, its narrow streets and picturesque sea views. South of Mandraki is a historical landmark on the island of Nisyros - Paleokastro. It should not be released, as it is good to preserve a Dorian defensive bastion from the 7th century BC.
Another place offered in the excursions of Nisyros is the fishing village of Pali, located in the eastern part of the island. Tourists have a place to stay, a place to eat and relax, and most of all - a place to sunbathe or be alone after a walk in the beautiful nature. Nicaea, on the other hand, is such an attractive, picturesque and lively village that it evokes affection only by saying its name. It is located near the caldera and has a nice mosaic square, which reveals memorable views of the sea and the volcano.
Tourists rarely stay on Nisyros. They usually come for the day, travel around the island and leave it in the late afternoon. Then Nisyros sank into silence. Interest for the visitors is the landscape of the caldera, which has five craters. Burning bright yellow sulfur crystals can be seen in the holes in the ground, and whistling and bubbling can be heard under the soft soil.
