Tiryns is one of the greatest cities of the Mycenaean civilization, which ruled the Eastern Mediterranean from the 15th to the 12th century BC and had an extremely important role in classical Greek culture.

The city is present in Homer's epics "Iliad" and "Odyssey", which are a major part of European art and literature for millennia. Today, the archeological part of Tiryns offers the ruins of a great city and together with Mycenae are part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.
