Philippi, Greece
Philippi is a city in the Roman province of Macedonia, located between Kavala and Drama, near today's Krinides. In Philippi in 42 BC Octavian Augustus and Mark Antony defeat the assassins of Gaius Julius Caesar - Brutus and Cassius. The city was founded by colonists from the nearby island of Thassos, then conquered by Philip II of Macedon, who renamed it after himself. The city of Philippi has a rich history, and in the ruins of the city's basilica was found one of the longest preserved old Bulgarian inscriptions - "Inscription from Philippi", a famous old Bulgarian monument from the time of Presian (836-852), which documents the accession of these lands to the First Bulgarian kingdom in 837. From 850 Philippi was again part of Byzantium.
