Skyros is the southernmost and largest island of the Sporades with an area of ​​209 km². Skyros Island is associated with ancient Greek mythology and has a rich history. The highest point of the island is the notorious peak Olympus. Skyros's connection with ancient Greek mythology is very close. Legend has it that the palace of King Lycomedes was located on the island of Skyros. In it, in order not to be involved in the Trojan War, Achilles hid. On the island of Skyros, his love affair with the king's daughter, Deidameia, from whom his son Neoptolemus was born, was born. In addition, the Athenian hero Theseus, who died there, was sent into exile to Skyros. Today, the castle of Lycomedes, which bears the same name, rises above the capital of the island, on the site of an ancient acropolis.
The capital of the island is Skyros. The main port is on the west coast and its name is Linaria. Skyros is an island of great importance for Greek defense, because there are bases of the Greek Navy and Air Force. Skyros has its own airport - Skyros National Airport. Skyros Island has many attractions. For example it is a castle, which is a sign of Venetian rule. The island is proud of the Byzantine monastery of St. George, the tomb of the English poet Rupert Brook, and the archeological finds from the Bronze Age in Palamari. Near the capital is a larger village - Molos. The other settlements on the island are too small to be called villages.
Skyros Island has over 10 beaches, most of which are isolated but accessible and untouched by the commercialism of the tourism industry.
