Sicily is an autonomous region in Italy and the largest island in the Mediterranean with an area of ​​25,708 km². It has a population of 5 million people. The largest city on the island is Palermo, and other major centers are Syracuse and Catania. The administrative region also includes several groups of small islands in the vicinity of Sicily. On the island of Sicily is the highest volcano in Europe - Mount Etna, with a height of 3,320 m.
From the VIII century BC Sicily has been colonized by Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians. The most important colony - Syracuse, was founded in 734 BC from the Greeks. After the Punic Wars, the Carthaginians were driven out and the island was conquered by the Roman Republic. 
After the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, Sicily passed into the hands of Byzantium, the Vandals and the Ostrogoths, and was later conquered by the Muslims, and Palermo became the capital of the Emirate of Sicily.
In the 11th century Sicily was conquered by the Normans and they made it their kingdom. Since the end of the 15th century the island is part of Spain, and in the 18th century fell under the rule of Austria. Sicily played an important role during Garibaldi's unification and liberation movement in the 19th century.
