The Palazzo Vecchio (Old Palace) rises on Piazza della Signoria in Florence. Its construction began in 1299-1314 in the Gothic style by Arnolfo Cambio, who also designed the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. This was originally home to the city government - the signoria. Today, the city council is meeting in it again, although many of its premises are open to the public. The magnificent clock tower rises above the palace.
Piazza della Signoria is the largest city square and the heart of Florence. In the center of Piazza della Signoria, a plaque commemorates the place where Savonarola, the Reformed monk, urged Florentines to burn paintings, books and more. secular things, was hanged and then burned at the stake as a heretic in 1498.
