Pompeii is an ancient Roman city near Naples, buried under a layer of volcanic ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted on 24 August 79. The city was discovered in 1748, when the first archaeological excavations were carried out, and Pompeii is now world famous as the best preserved ancient city. Ancient Pompeii was home to about 25,000 inhabitants and now only half of the city has been brought to the surface.
