Gargano, Italy

Gargano is a high peninsula in Italy, cut into the Adriatic Sea from the direction of the plains of Puglia. In summer, the Gargano peninsula and its resorts are quite lively. Most famous on the peninsula is the town of Monte Sant'Angelo, famous for the occasions when the Archangel Michael appeared between 490-493. In the 7th century, when he appeared for the fourth time, a monastery was founded where, during the Crusades, soldiers came to pray before setting out.
Today, the cave where the Archangel Michael appeared is among the most important places of pilgrimage in Italy. The cave is now swallowed up by a church, the "Sanctuary of St. Michael", dating from the 12th century. The church is famous for its beautiful Byzantine-style doors.
A must-visit in Gargano is the island of Tremiti, reached by hovercraft. From the island you can enjoy spectacular views of Gargano.
