Herculaneum is an ancient Roman town near Naples, devastated and submerged by the eruption of Vesuvius 79 years ago. Herculaneum was a residential district of the rich built here for the coolness and the sea view. Herculaneum, like Pompeii, was discovered in the 17th century and today is only half-removed to the surface.

The most interesting things to see at Herculaneum are: the Gymnasium; the House with the Atrium; the House with the Wooden Lattice; the House with the Charred Partition; the Painting House; the Baths; the Samnite House; the House with the Mosaic with Neptune and the Amphitrite; the House with the Pretty Court; the House with the Deer, etc.
