
Salerno, Italy

Salerno is a city in Italy, a famous seaside resort. It is situated along the eastern shore of the Gulf of Salerno. About 80 km to the northwest is the city of Naples. Salerno was by the Romans and in the 2nd century had the status of a Roman colony. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire it was under Byzantine rule for several centuries, then was a free city state, in 1077 it was captured by the Normans. Salerno is famous for the oldest medical school founded in the 11th century, which was closed by the Mura, king of the kingdom of Naples during the Napoleonic reign. Interesting things to see in Salerno are: the Pinto Palace; the Cathedral; the Church of San Benedetto; the Church of San Pietro in Vinculis; the Church of Sant'Agostino; the Church of Sant'Apollonia; the Archaeological Museum, etc.
