The Basilica of San Francesco was erected in the period 1225-1258 and later enlarged in the 14th-15th centuries. The Basilica of San Francesco suffered much damage in a fire in 1655 and an inept restoration in 1885-1892. The most interesting things that have survived are the tombs of the Tolomei family, one of Siena's prominent families. To the south of the church is the chapel of St. Bernardino, where there are beautiful frescoes of the Life of the Virgin by Sodoma, Beccafumi and Girolamo del Pacchia.
