A characteristic feature of Bologna were the towers - over 180 in the past. They symbolized the power of individual families. Only a few now survive. The most famous are the two leaning towers Garisenda and Asinelli. Their construction began in 1109. At the moment, the Asinelli Tower is open to visitors and offers a beautiful view of Bologna. It is 97.5 m high and ranks fourth in Italy.
