The fortress wall of Lucca is one of the best preserved medieval walls in Italy. It is 4,195 m long and has 11 bastions and 6 gates. Luca's fortress wall is 12 metres high and was built by Flemish engineers in 1504-1645. Marie Louise Bourbon converted part of the old structures into a garden.
