Lake Constance, also known as the Bodensee, "Swabian Sea" or the French name - Konstanz, is a lake on the Rhine, located between Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The lake was formed during the Ice Age by the Rhine Glacier and the Rhine continues to flow into its southeastern part and flows from the northwest.
The lake is one of the largest in Germany and the third largest in Europe, following Lake Balaton and Lake Geneva. The area of Lake Constance is 536 square kilometers and its greatest depth is 254 meters. 173 km from the shore of the lake is in Germany, Switzerland owns 72 km of its length, and Austria has 28 km left.
Interestingly, there is no generally agreed agreement on exactly where the border between the countries inside the lake passes. According to Switzerland, it passes in the middle, according to Austria, the lake is a joint possession of all countries on its shores, and Germany does not have a clear position. The three largest islands in the lake are Reichenau, Mainau and Lindau. The area around the lake is known as a wine region.
Referring to archeological excavations, historians say that the areas around Lake Constance were inhabited as early as 3000 BC. After the Celts, who lived here around 400 BC, the Romans laid hands and ruled his lands. Cities were created around the lake, the most important of which were Constanta and Arborfelix. The present name of Lake Constance was given in 830. Important battles were fought around the lake during the Thirty Years' War, as well as in 1799 during the Coalition Wars - Austria against France.
Lake Constance is a central tourist attraction in Germany. Attractions include the Mainau Flower Island, the Reichenau Monastery (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and the medieval ancient city of Lindau. Konstanz is the liveliest and largest resort town by the lake, with a beautiful and pristine medieval center. On its own small island, connected to the city by a paved road, is the Steigenberger Hotel, which dates back to the 13th century, when it was a monastery with vaulted galleries.
