Church of Saint Demetrius, Thessaloniki
The largest Orthodox church in Thessaloniki is the church of St. Demetrius, which is the patron saint of the city. In the church are the relics of the Saint, which were placed in a silver coffin and preserved in the former small church, and there, according to legend, flowed incense.
Saint Demetrius was born in Thessaloniki in the 3rd century. His father was the mayor of the city and secretly believed in Christ. When the young man's parents died, Emperor Maximilian appointed him to a high post with the task of persecuting Christians. But Dimitar began to promote and spread the faith of Christ.
Emperor Maximilian asked Dimitar to renounce his faith, but he refused and was thrown into prison, and later stabbed with a spear in 306. The date of Dimitar's death is considered to be October 26. Before his death, he handed over his wealth to his servant, who took the blood-soaked shirt and dipped his ring in it, which performed many miracles and healed many people.
During the reign of Emperor Constantine a small church was built on the place where Dimitar was killed, and later in 413 a layman, grateful for his healing, decided to build a larger temple on the place of the small church.
