The island of Astypalea is inhabited by about 1200 inhabitants. Its name was given by the Dorians, who were its first settlers. Their traces date back to before the Phoenicians. The island administratively belongs to the Dodecanese group, but geographically it is located between them and the Cycladic islands. Astypalea Island is hilly, and a narrow strip of about 100 meters divides it into inner and outer. The island has an airport, which has convenient connections to the island of Rhodes.
