The Roman Forum of Athens was created by virtue of the donations from Gaius Julius Caesar and Octavian Augustus. Work on its construction was completed in 11 BC. At the time when the Roman Empire ruled, the Roman Forum was associated with the imposing ancient agora at the foot of the Acropolis.
The Roman Forum of Athens has a rectangular courtyard surrounded by Ionian-style warehouses, shops and columns. The courtyard of the Roman Forum was covered with terracotta in the time of Emperor Hadrian. In 267, after an attack over Athens, the city center moved from the agora to the Roman Forum and Hadrian's Library. Churches, craft workshops and houses were built in the area of the forum during the Byzantine period and the Turkish occupation.
