The Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna is the biggest attraction of the city. It was built between 521 and 547 and is one of the most significant examples of Byzantine art in Western Europe. The church has an octagonal shape and is lined with a mosaic from the 6th century. The best mosaics depict Emperor Justinian I and his wife Theodora. 
In the park of the Basilica of San Vitale rises the tomb of Gala Placidia, the sister of Emperor Honorius I. The chapel of the tomb is also completely covered with mosaics - the most beautiful in Italy. 
Part of the building of the Basilica of San Vitale houses the National Museum famous for its ivory collections, old coins, archeological exhibits, bronze figures, fabrics, weapons, ceramics and mosaics.
