Fort Bard is located in the Aosta Valley. The present fortress was first mentioned in documents from 1034. It came under the rule of the Savoy dynasty in 1242, when it was conquered by Amadeus IV. In the 17th-18th centuries the fortress walls and defensive structures were strengthened. 
Fort Bard was destroyed by order of Napoleon, but was later largely rebuilt. It is currently closed for visits.
