The construction of the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute in Venice began in 1629 and was completed in 1631. It was built in honor of the Blessed Virgin and the vow made by the Venetian Senate - to build a temple if the Virgin helps save the city from the plague.
The winner of the competition was Baldassare Longena, who later designed other churches: the Church of the Gods, the Great Carmelite School and the palaces Dom Pesaro and Dom Retzonico in Venice.
The main entrance of the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute is open only on the Feast of Salvation held on November 21. It is interesting to see in it the sculpture designed by Longen and made by Just Lecourt - "Virgin Mary banishes the plague", as well as paintings by Titian, Tintoretto and others.
