The Buchan Caves Reserve, Australia
The Buchan Caves Reserve is home to two of the most interesting caves accessible to tourists in Australia - the Royal and Fairy Caves. The Fairy Cave is 400m long and there are several interesting stalagmite formations such as the Hall of Gems, the Cave, the Wedding Cake, the Hall, the Bridal Chamber and more. These formations have different mineral composition and hence different colours - green, red, brown. In the Royal Cave, one can see the "Niagara Falls" and the "Spring of the Gods" - a beautiful lake surrounded by calcite formations. The fossilised bones of a wombat the size of a horse have been found in the surroundings and in the caves, as well as the skeleton of an equally large kangaroo. Archaeologists have determined that Aboriginal people lived here around 15,000 BC. The Buchan Caves Reserve can be visited at any time of the year, and the nearest town is Buchan, 1 km away.
