Thar Desert, India
The Thar Desert or Great Indian Desert stretches from the Indus and Sutlej rivers in eastern Pakistan to the Aravil Mountains in northwest India. It is the most densely populated desert in the world. Among the most beautiful and famous cities are Jaipur, Jaisalmer and Jodhpur.
Jaislamer is located in the heart of the Thar Desert. Its palaces, fortifications and temples are magnificent. The city is called "golden" because of the reflection of the glow from the pink sandstone at sunset.
A camel ride on the rolling dunes is an extraordinary experience. To the south is the Thar Desert National Park, which includes three lakes and the Sudashri Forest Post. Desert antelopes, foxes, cats, reptiles and some types of birds are found in it - great Indian bustards, blue-tailed bee-eaters and others.
An interesting experience here is the 3-day desert festival on the dunes under the full moon in January-February. The best time to visit is from November to March and the nearest city is Jaisalmer, 65 km from the Desert Park.
