Piazza di Spagna is one of the symbols of Rome. Between it and the Trinità dei Monti (with the church of the same name) are the Spanish Steps. The monumental 138-step staircase was built by French diplomat Stefano Gueffier to connect the Spanish embassy, which is still there, with the church above.
There is currently a flower market on the stairs; it is and is a favorite place for tourists to have lunch (now officially banned with hefty fines). The Spanish Steps are constantly being renewed, most recently in 1995. The Piazza di Spagna is also home to the Barcaccia Fountain ("The Ugly Boat"). According to legend, Pope Urban VIII placed the fountain here after being impressed by a boat brought here by a flood from the Tiber River.
