The Saint Mark's Basilica in Venice is half Christian church, half mosque. This building was designed in the 11th century as a place to store the relics of St. Mark the Evangelist, the patron saint of Venice.
Inside the Saint Mark's Basilica, nearly 4,000 square meters golden mosaics give the building an unusually exotic atmosphere. The Pala d’Oro is a stunning gilded silver screen decorated with 1,927 gems and 255 enameled tiles. The richly decorated facade of the Saint Mark's Basilica is crowned with replicas of four famous gilded horses made of bronze.
