Bedlands National Park, USA
Bedlands National Park is located in southwestern South Dakota and is an extraordinarily beautiful semi-desert landscape. The cliffs were formed by the successive accumulation of sand, silt, clay and volcanic ash millions of years ago. The fossils found in these rocks show that the unique three-toed horses, sabre-toed tigers, extraordinary pigs, elephant-like creatures, ancient rhinoceroses and dog-sized camels lived here in ancient times.
Thousands of years later, the River White carved its bed out of the soft rocks. As a result, the rocks took on bizarre shapes - jutting columns, cones and rock needles. Indians have hunted here since earliest times, and in December 1890 white settlers slaughtered the Lakota tribe.
The Bedlands is a place of startling and somewhat frightening beauty.
