The Munich Rezidenz is a two-story complex arranged with about six courtyards, which today is home to an impressive collection of paintings, extraordinary tapestries and incredible busts. There is something extraordinary in the Munich Rezidenz – in one of its wings, behind a thick steel door, the gold of the Wittelsbachs is housed.
This jewel is the treasury of the family, in which the total number of about 1000 objects includes gold, silver, porcelain, crystal and precious stones. Crowns from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries can be seen here, long before the art of grinding was perfected. Thanks to this perfection, a masterpiece from the 16th century exists today.
This is a statuette depicting St. George defeating the dragon. The unique is made entirely of precious stones, with the armor made of diamonds, the dragon made of emeralds, and the blood flowing from its severed neck made of rubies. The fantastic work of art glows so brightly that when you try to photograph it, all you get is a blurry blob.
When it comes to kings and queens, even everyday objects are made of ivory, porcelain and crystal such as jugs, plates, glasses, cutlery and more. In the Residence, the hall dedicated to the treasures in which the Wittelsbachs received as gifts from India, the Middle East and China stands out.
