Donskoy Monastery, Moscow

The Donskoy Monastery from the 16th century is an amazing monument of Russian architecture and art. The monastery is surrounded by a high defensive wall with 12 towers. It is located in the area where in 1591 the Russian army eagerly awaited the attack of the Tatar hordes gathered on the other side of the river. According to legend, when the Russian soldiers woke up one morning, they found that the enemy had left their positions. Then the regent Boris Godunov ordered a monastery to be built on the site to perpetuate the victory. This victory is attributed to the miraculous power of the icon of the Holy Mother of God of Don, which Prince Dmitry of Don carried with him during his military campaign in 1350. It was then that the Russian troops celebrated their first decisive victory against the Tatars. That is why the monastery bears the name of the strange icon.
