The Old Stock Exchange is located on Vasilyevsky Island and is a neoclassical building erected between 1804 and 1810 by the Swiss architect Toma de Tomon and symbolizes the financial and naval power of St. Petersburg. It has housed the Naval Museum since 1940, founded in 1805. Its collections date back to the time of Peter the Great. The collections include models of all vessels created in Russian shipyards from 1709 onwards. Here you can see a wooden boat from 3000 years ago, found at the bottom of the river Bug. Numerous personal belongings of Peter the Great are also on display, including his first boat and the ax he used to create it.
