Derbent is a city in Dagestan, the administrative center of the Derbent region.
The city is located in a narrow passage between the Caspian Sea and the foothills of the Caucasus. It is the southernmost city in Russia and has an exceptional geostrategic position in Eurasia. This is one of the oldest cities in the world, as the first settlement in these lands dates back to the Bronze Age. The most ancient name of the city is the Caspian Gates - with this name Derbent was first mentioned in the annals. It was with him that the city was first mentioned in the 6th century BC by the ancient Greek geographer Hecate of Miletus.
Passing through the Caspian Gates and stepping on the land of Derbent, people seems to fall into another culture and time. The urban appearance of Derbent makes it a typical medieval and eastern city, whose heart beats in a citadel located in its center. The baths, mosques and even the tomb are still functioning. The Juma Mosque, built in the 6th century, was built on an old Christian basilica.
In general, Derbent is a city that has borrowed for its appearance many of the foreign and dominant cultures. Thanks to this, today tourists can enjoy enough sights.
A visit to Derbent should not pass without visiting the markets and tea stalls, the Tatar mausoleum from the VIII century, the mosques "Kirchlar" and "Bala", as well as another mosque - "Chertebe".
