Ussuriysk is a Russian city located in the valley of the Razdolnaya River, 98 km from Vladivostok and 60 km from the border with China, with a population of 170 thousand people. The settlement was founded in 1866 as the village of Nikolskoye, as a decisive factor in its development was the construction of the Trans-Siberian railway in 1891. Later, when the villages of Nikolskoye and Ketritsevo merged, the city of Nikolsk was formed. For some time, the city was called Voroshilovsk after the surname of the Soviet military leader Kliment Voroshilov. Its current name, Ussuriysk, was adopted in 1957. The summer here is warm and humid, and the winter is clear and cold.
The sights of Ussuriysk, related to the city's past from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, can be seen along the so-called "Arbat" street. The beautiful old buildings impress with their interesting architecture. Opened in 1999, the museum currently houses more than 1,500 exhibits telling the history of the city.
The church "St. Bogoroditsa" was built on the place of the destroyed church "St. Nicholas", in which a prayer service was held in 1891 in the presence of the future Tsar Nicholas II. Apart from its admirable architecture, the bell tower of the church is one of the symbols of the Ussuriysk. Emerald Park is located near Ussuriysk. Here, the life of past eras is interestingly recreated in authentic buildings of a rural and commercial house, a bathhouse, a forge, a prison and other buildings reminiscent of the past of this region of Russia.
The stone statue of the turtle is an important landmark of Ussuriysk. In the 1960s, two such turtle statues were found in the area - one was sent to Khabarovsk, and the other was exhibited in the DORA Park in Ussuriysk. This park is a favorite strolling spot for city dwellers because of its beautiful scenery and several relaxing cafes.
The Lotus Lake, located near the city and when this "royal" flower blooms, is beautiful here, and a boat ride among the blooming plants is a wonderful experience.
The local history museum occupies the oldest and most remarkable building in Ussuriysk.
