The temple probably originated in the V - VI century and was dedicated to St. Sirius. After the growth of Genoa, it was decided to build a Cathedral dedicated to St. Lawrence. Its construction began in the ninth century and was completed in 1118. Over the centuries, the Cathedral of St. Lawrence has been renovated and beautified many times. According to legend, the relics of John the Baptist are kept here. There is also a green glass goblet, which is said to have been used during the Last Supper.
