Field of Mars, Saint Petersburg

Field of Mars is one of the most beautiful parks in Saint Petersburg. Known more as a place for jogging and a pleasant holiday, it features many green areas and alleys. Here you can have a picnic at any time of the day and spend hours enjoying the tranquility and the pleasant landscape.
For many years on the site of today's park, stretches a large swamp. In the early 18th century, when Peter the Great built the Summer Palace nearby, he ordered the swamp to dry up and become a place of rest. Gradually, carnivals and fireworks performances began to take place on the meadow, and it was called Entertainment. When later an elegant wooden house was built on this place for the wife of Peter the Great - Catherine I, the meadow was renamed Tsaritsyna.
According to her idea, alleys with beautiful flowers according to the season, lawns and several fountains were created here. But today the wooden house is gone. Over time, the meadow began to be used for parades and exercises, several barracks were built and since 1805 the field was named after the ancient god of war - Mars. At one point, the Field of Mars became a cemetery for ordinary Russians, as well as famous revolutionaries and prominent leaders who died in the name of their homeland.
To commemorate their memory, a memorial was erected in the central part of the park in 1917 under the title "To the heroes-fighters for the freedom of Russia, who became victims of this struggle." It bears names such as Moises Solomonovich Uritsky, assassinated by Leonid Kanegizer in August 1918, which led to the beginning of the Red Terror. Here are buried the Petrograd workers who fell during the Yaroslavl uprising in July 1918, as well as the Soviet military leader Rudolf Severs - a participant in the First World and Civil War and died in battle, and many more. others. In 1957, the Eternal Flame was lit in the center of the Memorial.
This flame ignited the fire of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow, as well as the Eternal Flame of Glory in Nizhny Novgorod. A particularly magical atmosphere is created when a flash mob is organized in the park and hundreds of lights go to the sky, carrying particles of them for all people around the world.
Near the Field of Mars Park are the Marble Palace, the Summer Garden and the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, which is the most photographed in Saint Petersburg because of the exterior of the building.
