Tui, Pontevedra
Tui is a city located in Galicia, in the province of Pontevedra, on the banks of the river Mino. Called Tude by the Romans, the city was for a time elevated as the capital of the Kingdom of Galicia. After the invasions of Alfonso I of Austria against the Moors, the city fell into the buffer zone between Moors and Christians, known at the time as "The Desert of the Duero".
Today, the town center is near the inn of San Telmo. The charming and elegant Rua Ordoñez separates the modern from the old town. A network of cobblestone streets saturated with a unique atmosphere unravels in nine directions to nine monuments, above which rises the Santa Maria Cathedral from the XI-XIII centuries. Located on the top of the hill, it preserves within itself the Romanesque period in its main vestibule, as well as the traces of the Gothic style in its western vestibule. Two bridges connect Tui and Valencia: the old Tui International bridge, completed in 1878 by Gustave Eiffel, and a new modern bridge from around 1990.
Among the sights of the city are the two museums - one dedicated to archeology and church art, and the other a diocesan museum, which has preserved exhibits from Roman times to the Baroque era. In Tui, you can also visit the Monastery of the Poor Clares, who will sell you home-made cookies.
