Soria, Spain
What makes Soria interesting and memorable is not inside the city, but around it. Although not the most attractive capital of Castile and Leon, Soria is the magnetic green beauty of the transitional region between Castile, Aragon and Rioja. Celebrated by the poet Antonio Machado, the golden-stone houses with red-tiled roofs are clustered along narrow streets in the city center, and those around Calle Aduana Vieja form an interesting tangle of roads.
In places, the labyrinth is cut by the official Parque Alameda de Cervantes and the heart of the city – the Plaza Mayor. A dreamy walk to shake off a hard day can take place calmly in the Alameda de Cervantes park.
In Soria, the spiritual is preserved in the churches of Santo Domingo, the Cathedral of San Pedro and the Monastery of San Juan de Duero. Santo Domingo is a Romanesque church with statues of its founders on either side of its richly sculptured portal. The Cathedral of Soria dates from the 16th century and is also Romanesque and is located near the Duero River. It is around this river that there are also the remains of the monastery in Soria, which was built in the 13th century and reflects the Moorish presence in these lands. Interesting to visit is the Museo Numantino, where, for example, the Roman remains of Numancia, restored by the Romans, are laid out.
