Monastery of Leyre is not the only holy place in Navarre. This area has more impressive monasteries and Castillo de Javier is one of them. Located a few kilometers southwest of Monastery of Leyre, this delightful monastery was the birthplace of the Jesuit missionary St. Francis Xavier. The saint lived in the period 1506 - 1552 and was proclaimed the patron saint of Navarre. The place of retreat and mission of the castle is a basilica located near the castle.
Among its outstanding values are the Gothic statue of Christ, carved from walnut wood, and a 15th-century fresco depicting the Dance of Death. These riches can be seen in the so-called Holy Tower of Jesus. The Castillo de Javier Monastery offers an unforgettable view from the terrace of the crenellated ramparts north to Leire and south to Aragon, and inside one can enjoy a drink at one of the cafes or buy a souvenir from the souvenir shops.
