The Columbus Monument was erected in 1888 to honor the discoverer of America and to commemorate the famous explosion. The spot where Christopher Columbus arrived in 1493 after the discovery of America was chosen as the site for this 7-meter statue of Columbus pointing to the sea. It is a central and strategic location - at one end of the famous La Rambla and close to the city's seafront, as well as the Aquarium and the marina.
The Columbus Monument was supposed to point to America, but mistakenly points to Europe. From this monument, Barcelona can be seen from above. In itself, this monument is very impressive, covered with many ornaments and small, very beautifully crafted details. Raphael Atche was chosen as the author of this creation.
