Virreina Palace, Barcelona
The Virreina Palace, or better known as the Viceroy's Palace, is a palace built between 1772 and 1775. It was designed in 1770 by the architect Josep Ribes in the attractive Baroque style and impresses with its Baroque and Rococo elements.
The Virreina Palace was built for the Viceroy of Peru, Manuel Amat. The viceroy was a widower and upon his arrival in Barcelona laid the foundations of the palace with the clear aim of pleasing and winning the favor of his new wife. This building is one of the best examples of civil Catalan architecture from this period.
Today, the Virreina Palace hosts major temporary exhibitions, and its building belongs to the Municipal Council. The exhibition center displays works by some of Catalonia's most important contemporary artists, such as Oriol Bohigas and Antoni Abad.
