Laguardia may not seem like one of the most popular and interesting destinations in Spain, but there are still good reasons to visit and spend some unforgettable days behind the walls of this picturesque village.
In the shadow of the mountains La Guardia is an interesting example of a medieval fortified settlement that has preserved its historic 13th-century historic walls, including its four entrance gates. Behind its walls you can see historic buildings from different periods.
Today, even with a changed appearance, it is easy to imagine La Guardia as it was in the Middle Ages. There are only a few streets, which makes it easy to see and explore. However, it is large enough to provide a pleasant shopping, a magical journey into the world of cuisine, not to mention the tasting of some of the best wines from Spain in the wine region of La Rioja.
Over the centuries, the inhabitants of La Guardia have built their homes deep in the rocks to be their refuge during the siege of the village. Remains of wells and labyrinths of underground tunnels can still be found today, which prove to be very suitable for the process of wine fermentation.
La Guardia is known around the world for something not so pleasant. In this village in 1480 was committed perhaps the most famous alleged case of ritual murder of a child committed by a supposedly baptized Jew-Maran, who secretly continued to profess Judaism. In 1569, at the site of the accident in La Guardia, a monument was erected to the child, called the Monument to the Holy Child of La Guardia.
Another historical landmark is a small museum with an exhibition of stone inscriptions, Roman amphorae and other objects found during archeological excavations.
Many people visit La Guardia for its mountainous terrain, looking for experiences such as horseback riding in the mountains and walking the network of trails in Rioja. Magnificent lobsters and the legendary Monte de Santa Tegra, as well as fantastic views of Portugal across the Minho River and the Atlantic Ocean, are among the reasons that would make everyone visit this remote city.
