Bonn, Germany
Bonn is a city in West Germany, located on the banks of the Rhine in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, about 25 km south of Cologne. With more than 2,000 years of history, Bonn is one of the historically emblematic German cities. The Rhine passing through Düsseldorf and Cologne does not fail to add variety to the landscape of the city of Bonn. This relatively quiet city is located about 25 km south of Cologne. Bonn is the hometown of the composer Beethoven.
The history of the city dates back to Roman times. Around the 11th century BC a small Roman legion was stationed on the lands of today's city, and the first settlers were the local Eburoni tribes, who joined the Roman army. The formed settlement received the Latin name "Bonna", whence the present name of the town. In the XIII century a Romanesque fortress was built on an area of 250,000 sq.m.
A dense network of streets and many buildings was built between its walls. Here were located the large buildings where the officers lived, barracks, stables and a military prison. From 1949 to 1990 it was the capital of West Germany, and after the unification with the GDR it was the seat of government until 1999, when the capital of a united Germany became Berlin again.
Bonn is one of the blessed cities that remained intact during World War II, which is why its architecture has been completely preserved since the beginning of the twentieth century.
Bonn's turbulent political past is not felt in its urban atmosphere, it can even be considered a romantic, quiet and peaceful city. Its great architecture tells about the historical past of the city.
The sightseeing tour of Bonn must pass through the local Botanical Garden, which is located in the city center. This "green oasis" is part of the university structure. Here, on a relatively small area, there are unique plant species such as amber tree, many wild plants, as well as some beautiful flowers.
An interesting landmark in the area is the palace in Bruhl, which must be seen during a visit to the city.
The Münster Church is one of the oldest German churches in Bonn. It was built between the XI-XIII century. For a time, Münster played the role of the cathedral of the archdiocese of Cologne. Today it is a papal basilica.
There are many interesting museums in Bonn - the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of the History of Germany, the native house of Bechtoven, turned into a museum, and the only museum of its kind for women. It was founded in 1981 by Marianne Pitzen and a group of working women.
