Meteor Crater is a huge hole in the arid Arizona desert. The crater is 1200 m in diameter and 173 m deep. It was formed 50 000 years ago by the fall of a meteorite 50 m in diameter, the composition of which was mainly nickel and iron. Although half of the asteroid's mass evaporated as it fell to earth, it caused an explosion 150 times more powerful than the bombs that exploded over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The crater was owned by the family of mining engineer Berringer, who had been involved in exploring the crater for many years.
