Mount Rushmore, USA

Mount Rushmore (1,745 m) is located above the Black Hills, near the town of Keystone, South Dakota, USA. It is famous for one of the largest carved monuments in the world, depicting the faces of four American presidents who played the greatest role in the development of their country - George Washington (1732-1799) , Thomas Jefferson( 1743-1826), Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) and Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865).
The idea was the brainchild of local historian Doane Robinson who wanted to make this little visited area famous. His project was approved by Congress. The sculptor Gutzon Borglum chose Mount Rushmere because of its impressive height and quality granite. Work began in 1927 with the help of 400 other workers. Despite the difficult conditions, everyone involved in the completion of this spectacular project did very well without making a single sacrifice. The sudden death of Gutzon Borglum, put an end to the work. Borglum's son tried to complete the project and after many tribulations, it was finished in 1941. The original conception was that the figures of the presidents would be in half height. But even though only the presidents' heads were sculpted, the monument is still majestic.
