Diamond Head is the world's most famous volcanic crater and is located on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. It is 230 m high and has a diameter of 1060 m. Formed 200,000 years ago, the volcano was extinct 150,000 years ago. In the 1880s, British sailors saw it from afar and thought the glittering calcite crystals in the molten lava were diamonds and hoped to strike it rich. Hence its name - Diamond Head. The crater was used for military purposes in World War I and World War II. There are hiking trails that serpentine up to the top of the crater, where you can get a spectacular view.
