The history of Hanover is extremely rich. It is interesting somewhere around the Middle Ages, when in Germany the foundations were laid for individual city-states, not united in a single state. Hanover is one of them. Hanover was first mentioned in documents from 1150 as a center of trade for the region. The first known feudal lord of Hanover was Ernst August, who married the granddaughter of King James I of England - Sofia.
Hanover and England have been under unified rule for almost 125 years under the Personification movement, which is the unification of different kingdoms by one ruler. In 1807, during the time of Napoleon, the territories around Hanover became part of the Kingdom of Westphalia, and gradually and fairly quickly by 1810 almost the entire territory of the Kingdom of Hanover passed to Westphalia.
In 1813, Hanover was again ruled by England, when King George III was already on the throne. In 1815 the city became a kingdom by decision of the Congress of Vienna, and in 1866 Hanover became a province of Prussia. In 1946, the separate province of Hanover became part of today's Lower Saxony. In 1949, the province became part of the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Hanover's rich history is evidenced by its impressive architecture. The center of the old town is "Marktplatz" with the old Gothic town hall, built in Gothic style between 1439-1455. Here is the church built of red bricks in the fourteenth century. Representatives of the later Baroque style are the cathedrals "St. Johannes" from the XV century and "St. Clemens", built in the XVI century. The oldest clerical building is that of the Cathedral of the Cross.
The rich historical past of the city is told by the other important sights of Hanover - its beautiful castles. Among the most famous are Lainschlos from the seventeenth century, the renovated in 1832 "Wangenheim Palais", as well as the magnificent Herrenhaus castle with its gardens, built in the Baroque style on an area of 50 hectares.
