The Tretyakov Gallery was officially opened as a state museum in 1892. The beginning was set by the young wealthy industrialist Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov. Tretyakov's huge collection is kept as his private property, but in fact everyone who wants to see it has free access to it. In 1892, six years before his death, he donated to the Moscow City Council all the works he owned, including the small collection inherited from his brother Sergei.
Today the gallery exhibits works dating from the XI - XX century. Here there is everything - icons, amazing portraits and landscapes, famous paintings by Russian realists, admirable works of Russian symbolists, impressionists and modernists.
Here is the "Holy Trinity" by Andrei Rublov; "Road to Albano" and "In the Park" by Mikhail Lebedev; "The Last Day of Pompeii" by Bryulov; "The Appearance of Christ to the People" by Ivanov and many, many works by famous masters.
