North Sinai is a governorate in northeastern Egypt, located in the northern part of the Sinai Peninsula. It borders the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Israel to the east and the areas of South Sinai to the south and Suez and Ismailia to the north. North Sinai is a huge plateau with several small villages and glistening dunes of coastal salt marshes.
Heading east along to the Mediterranean coast, an extremely interesting stop is Pelusium. It is a fortress city with a picturesque history, which in the past played the role of guardian of the Egyptian eastern border. The source of history preserves a story which claims that it was in his lands that the Persian army of Cambyses conquered the territory without a battle, but only with cats in front of it.
Here again Ptolemy XIII captured the Roman general Pompey. The Muslim era is that part of the time axis that coincides with the decline of the city, of which only ruins remain today. Archaeologists have been exploring the lands of this settlement in North Sinai for archeological excavations and so far have managed to find only one Roman amphitheater.
To the east, the road passes through Bedouin villages. Much of the shores of North Sinai are occupied by the marshy lagoon of the Bardawil Lake. It acts as a large fishpond, providing income to local fishermen. Many species of birds find their home among 220 square kilometers area of the Zaranik protectorate - only lagoons and swamps.
The capital of North Sinai is El Arish, located 35 km after Lake Bardawil. In the past, when it played the role of a Roman garrison, the city was known as Rinocol - the city of carved noses. He earned this nickname because of the fate of the exiles in his lands.
When the Israelis conquered Sinai in 1967, it declined considerably, and for this reason El Arish has few historical and tourist attractions. But on the other hand, it has a great market every Tuesday, which fills the city with an unadulterated atmosphere and a spectacle of colors and sounds. Another main attraction is the beach, which is undeveloped and quiet.
