As an integral part of the landscape of eastern Cairo, on its high platform, proudly rises built around 1170 by the founder of the Ayyubid dynasty Al-Nasser Salah al-Din al-Ayub Citadel. The fortress of Cairo has never been attacked by external enemies, but has been captured by rival branches of the crown inside the country.
It was not until the construction of Sultan Hassan's mosque that its roof became an excellent site for shelling and the Citadel was threatened. This necessitated the construction of a newly built mosque to this day. Whoever ruled the Citadel had the opportunity to control the entire city.
The citadel has served as the seat of Egyptian rulers for 700 years. Each new government led to perestroika. In the 16th century, the citadel of Cairo was conquered by the Turks through treason and the pasha's residence was established there. Later, in the same way, it was handed over to Napoleon for two years. After him, the English were here for a short time, until Mohamed Ali, the son of an Albanian merchant, the founder of the last dynasty of Egypt, appeared on the scene.
In 1830, Mohamed Ali commissioned the Istanbul architect Yusuf Boshnak to design the famous Alabaster Mosque in the Citadel on the model of the Turkish Yen. This is how the most remarkable building within the citadel appeared - the Mosque of Mohammed Ali.
In shape it is a typical Ottoman cult building with large domes and has the highest minaret, rising 82 meters from the ground. Up to its eleventh meter, the mosque is lined with alabaster. Inside is the tomb of Mohammed Ali, on which are inscribed gilded inscriptions. However, it was he who demolished many of the buildings of the Citadel. But one of them escapes this fate and that is the Al-Nasir Muhammad Mosque, built in 1335. According to the ruler, it was suitable for a stable and today it can boast of a very good and preserved condition.
One of the main things for which the Cairo Citadel must be visit is its West Terraces, which reveal incredible views of the capital.
